Sarah The Greyhound Goes To School!

A little while ago Rescued Racers rehomed a rather stunning blue brindle girl called Sarah to first time greyhound owners David and Lynda from Cardiff. Since then, they have became greyhound ambassadors, highlighting the advantages of greyhound ownership. Lynda has even gone back to school with Sarah.

Lynda takes up the story.

Thursday 10 July 2008 and, as I looked out of the window to check whether or not the monsoon-type weather continued to batter us, I was presently surprised (and extremely grateful) to see that it was dry but cloudy.  How fortunate for Sarah and I as we were visiting a local primary school in Cardiff that morning.  A few weeks previously, I had been asked by my sister if I would be interested in taking Sarah (who has been informally ‘adopted’ by my 5-year old niece) into school to say ‘hello’ to her and all her classmates.  Apparently, the theme for the term was ‘pets’ so the children were learning all about the different kinds of pets there were, how they were cared for and what kind of food they were given to eat etc.  An immediate yes was the reply so, in due course, a very excited niece came home one day to say that permission had been given for us to pay a visit.

Having met my sister, the three of us walked to the playground at the rear of the school where we awaited the arrival of the youngsters.  A sea of faces eventually started filing out of the doorway with the teachers asking them to form a circle and then to sit down.  There was quite a crowd as two classes had come out to meet and greet us.  I think Sarah must have wondered what on earth was going on but being the very sociable and lovely-natured greyhound that she is, she took it all in her stride.

Sarah and I then walked slowly around the circle of children to enable them to have a ‘pat’ on the head and a ‘tickle’ under the chin (this being Sarah’s favourite TLC moment).  Sarah stood very still and quiet whilst lapping up all the attention.

After we completed the circle, it was question time.  How pleasing and encouraging it was to see lots of small hands going up in the air with the most popular questions being: how old is Sarah, when is her birthday, does she like toys, and what treats does she like?

Sadly, after 30-45 minutes, it was time to say ‘goodbye’ to our new friends as they all lined up in 2s to go back to class.  Fortunately, there was just enough time for my sister to take a couple of pictures as a record of the event.

Goody bags containing a picture of a greyhound to colour in, sticker, key-ring, a copy of ‘The Rescued Racers Young Persons Information Pamphlet’ and a small packet of sweets were given to the teacher to hand out to the children at the end of the day.  I have been reliably informed that the children were very excited upon receipt of these bags.

I cannot tell you how much Sarah and I enjoyed the visit.  The children were a pleasure to meet and very enthusiastic about meeting a greyhound.

Sarah came away with a ‘Gold Star’ and I came away with homework!!!!
