| Part One |
| Dane was bought two years ago this January following an initial
advert for greyhound adoption in the Free Ads, but my family promptly informed
me that they were far to big for my size of house. So another advert was
spotted again in the Free Ads for a greyhound x collie x whippet pup. Now
the guy that we got him from assured us that he wouldn't grow no bigger than
21". We arranged to meet him at the Asda Car Park in Merthyr Tydfil. He had a number of puppies in the back of his van who looked quite unattractive, smelly and poorly kept. When I saw Dane I knew there and then I that I could not leave him. (Goodness knows what became of the others). Dane, as we called him weighed only 2lbs, he was full of fleas and worms and he would pee and poop where ever he went. Oh and BTW he passed 21" months ago and is now standing at 29" and is still growing. He is a character, full of life and mischief and because he has never been raced has lots of energy. |
| Part Two |
| After a year I began to yearn for another, which took a great deal
of suggestion on my part to persuade my husband Kevin, who thought that another
greyhound would turn out to be the same sore of manic mutt that Dane was.
Along the way I began to follow with interest the work of Dawn Abraham and
Greyhound Welfare saving cuttings and generally keeping abreast of the
work that she was doing with these hounds. Eventually, in January 1999 I adopted Molly Malone - a 6 year old Irish Black who is extremely timid but complements Dane ever so nicely. When we had her she was completely bald on both thighs with a few other bumps and scratches from lying on concrete floors. However, the moment that she walked into the house she made it clear that she was going to be the top dog - the No 1 in the house. Since adopting Molly from Dawn, I have now become dedicated to their cause. I have been fortunate enough to home two greyhounds but now I fund-raise for Greyhound Welfare and am the local home checker in this area. These two greyhounds of mine are the best thing since sliced bread, and I am sure that everyone will agree once you have been smitten by them you will never want any other breed. Since this was written, Beverley is no longer a Greyhound Welfare volunteer. |
