Digger - our fifteenth contribution (by Gordon & Beth Sherwood)
The First Week With The Sherwood Clan
I fix spas and swimming pools for a job, one customer I went to, races Greys. I mentioned that greys make great pets, his reply was “Would you like one”. As I had been looking for a dog for several months I decided to take a look. Looking was easy.... convincing the Mrs. to have a dog was another story! Thank God for modern technology, a quick call on the cell phone, “ You know Dear, that dog that WE have been looking for, ... I just found Him, A two year old brindle male Greyhound named “Digger”, but he will be put down tomorrow if no one takes him.” Grease Grease Please Please Grease..!!!

Beth agreed to take the dog as he was to be put down the next day. But she did not expect me to bring him home that night. The kids were delighted, Digger hid behind my legs totally unsure of everything. Beth is not what you call a doggy person, Digger’s size scared Beth a bit, but she put on a brave face in front of the kids. She was expecting me to bring home a Chihuahua sized dog

After a bowl of Kibble ( a large sack supplied by the previous owner ) Digger was introduced to the sofa, very soft. Now he owns it. A long surf on the net found the site “A Breed Apart” the home pages enlightened us on the finer points of caring for a greyhound... LIKE: The dog should be kept inside preferably on the end of your bed. So we tried it out for size. I am 6Ft 3 and 103Kgms.With the wife in bed also there is not a lot of room even for the cat let alone a greyhound. Beth put up with this for about an hour, what broke the camels back was diggers panting, this rocked the bed so much Beth felt seasick. With privilege of being on the bed gone, Digger had to go back to the sofa. TOO LATE the bed was the place that he wanted to be. A compromise was reached... He slept on the floor beside me. After a couple of nights, the sofa became the place to be.

Everything was new for Digger, after being used to the cage and racing regime he would go nowhere without having to have the lead clipped to his collar, even to go outside to the toilet. Digger loves the van and going for a drive. We went down to Rotorua to visit the outlaws. Dinner was a BBQ at the lake, I had Digger on a lead, as I always do outside of the section, taking in a small walk before it was time to cook the food. The kids were feeding the swans off the end of the jetty so we walked along the jetty to the end... Digger did not stop ...

Thinking he could walk on water, he kept going .......... Lucky for him I had the lead and was able to stop him from going under ...... I thought dogs could swim !!! Digger had never seen water, what a lot of new things to learn ay.

The one time we could not Digger with us, we left him tied up to a chain sliding on a rope run. Bad decision ..... We had only been gone for three hours ....... Digger had chewed the rope into four pieces, got caught around the clothesline........... Boy am I in BIG TROUBLE with the Mrs. .......... Digger had pulled half the washing off the line and shredded THREE TOWELS and TWO TEA TOWELS But Beth could not stay mad at the dog for long, I think that she is warming to Digger. We have never seen a dog lie around so much, more like an overgrown pussy cat than a dog. Just the RIGHT sort of dog for us
